If you have never been to an airport lounge before you might wonder if they are really worth the price. From my experience as an aviation enthusiast and a vegetarian traveller airport lounges offer a mix of comfort, convenience and peace but sometimes they can get very busy and finding a good seat especially with a view of the runway can be a challenge.
In this post I will share what I have learned about the different types of lounges alternatives to traditional lounges and when I think it is worth booking access especially for UK flights.
My Experience Using Airport Lounges at Gatwick and Heathrow
When flying long haul I often worry about the food options onboard especially as a vegetarian. Meals onboard can be hit or miss so having access to a lounge with decent breakfast options really gives me peace of mind.
At Gatwick Airport I have spent time in lounges where breakfast is included fresh fruit pastries hot drinks and even some vegetarian hot options. The lounge offers privacy comfy seating and free Wi-Fi which is a bonus if you want to get some work done or just relax quietly before a long flight.
At Heathrow Terminal 5 lounges tend to be busier but well stocked. The British Airways lounge for example has a wider selection and runway views if you are lucky enough to get a seat near the windows.
Cross Comparison of Lounges and Airport Restaurants
Sometimes instead of paying for lounge access I have considered grabbing a meal at an airport restaurant. For example a meal at Wetherspoons in Gatwick cost me around £12. The food was decent but the environment was noisy and lacked privacy. There was Wi-Fi but it is not the relaxing peaceful setting you get in a lounge.
For me the lounge is about more than just food it is the quiet the space to unwind and the chance to avoid the airport crowds. That said if you are on a budget and do not mind a lively atmosphere airport restaurants can be a good alternative.
